CANCER PREVENTION LIFESTYLE
Cancer is defined as an uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. Some cells grow into a mass of tissue called tumour, which can be either benign or malignant. A malignant tumour would be considered a "cancer". As cardiovscular disease, cancer is largely preventable disease. The biggest factor in fighting cancer today is health education. As much as 80 percent of all human cancers are related to lifestyle or environmental factors(environmental factors includes diet, tobacco use, excessive use of alcohol, overexposure to sunlight, and exposure to occupational hazards, exposure to harmful chemicals, pesticides etc.). Most of these cancers can be prevented through positive lifestyle habits. The most effective way to protect against cancer is by changing negative lifestyle habits and negative behaviours that have been practised for years. Occupational hazards, such as asbestos fibres, nickel and uranium dusts, chromium compounds, vinyl chloride, bischlormethyl ether etc., increase the risk of cancer. The risk of occupational hazards is significantly magnified by the use of cigarette smoking.


AGE
Age is a risk factor for health-related problems because of the greater incidence of heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension, musculo-skeletal problems,lack of immunity, ageing of the functional systems of body, among the older people. This tendency may be partly increased by an increased risk among the other factors due to changes in lifestyle as people get older the physical activity is less, nutrition is poor, obesity, etc.


DIETARY HEALTH PROBLEMS
The diet should be low in fat and high in fibre, with ample amounts of vitamins from natural sources. Obesity should be avoided. Low fibre intake seems to increase the risk of colon cancer. These salt-cured, smoked and nitrite-cured foods have been linked to cancer of the esophagus and stomach, hence these foods should be avoided. Alcolholism increases the risk of certain cancers, especially when combined with tobacco smoking or smokeless tobacco. According to some research, the synergistic action of heavy use of alcohol and tobacco yields a fifteen-fold increase in cancer of the oral activity. High fat intake has been linked with many health problems.

PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS
Steps to minimize exposure to harmful electric fields, and reduce the risks to health.

1. Avoid putting beds near electrical appliances. Most adults sleep for around eight hours in every twenty four hours, and children even longer. Hence if we are sleeping in an electric field, we will be exposing ourself to the harmful effects of electric field for long periods. Alternating electric and magnetic fields can interfere with the metabolic processes of the body.

2. Avoid sleeping near electric heaters. Electric storage heaters heat up the stones inside them overnight and release this heat during the day. Similarly, electric heaters in hot water tanks heat the water during the night. Any thing placed near them is exposed to their adverse effects, so the solution is not to place bed near electric heaters. It is advisable to pace the electric heater at such a distance that the electric heater heats the air of the room and prevents transferring heat directly to human body.

3. Switch off and unplug appliances after use Whenever electric current flows through an appliance there is an electric field around it. In some appliances the on/off switch is located in the wiring circuit after live current has passed through the appliance, so even when it is switched off electric current flows through the electric appliance an generates an electric field.

4. Keep distance from electrical appliances Hand held tools such as electric drills, sanders, hedge trimmers, or hair dryers, generate high electric fields and are held close to the body. Often we use for few munutes. If we need to use hand held electric tools for more than an hour, at a time, it is advisable to have a rest for at least ten minutes for every hour.


PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS GENERATED BY KITCHEN APPLIANCES IRON
In common with any otherhand-held electrical appliance, iron generates a high electric field and is held close to the body. If ironing for long periods it is advisable to take a 10-minute break every hour.

MICROWAVE OVEN
It is advisable not to stand in front of the microwave oven while cooking, as the electric fields are enormous next to the appliance. Unlike an electric field does not stop when the source is turned off. So it is advisable to leave microwaved food for 5 minutes after cooking before eating it.

A lamp with a metal base creates very high fields. There is anecdotal evidence of people suffering frequent migraines or headaches after sitting reading for long periods by electric lamps with metal base. When the electric lamps with metal base was replaced with electric lamps with wooden base the head aches ceased.


STANDARD LAMP
It is advisable to avoid lamps made of metal, especially brass near arm chair or any where we rest for long periods.


ADJUSTABLE LIGHT SWITCH
This type of light switch gives out very high electric fields unless it has a well earthed brass cover plate. It is advisable not to place the arm chair or sofa or bed near the adjustable light switch.


RADIANT ELECTRIC FIRE
The fields around radiant electric fire can be high. It is advisable not to sit directly in front of the radiant electric fire. It is healthier to use the radiant electric fire to heat the room air.


TELEVISION
The electric field is high right next to the television screen, may be as much as 50 volts per metre. At 2.5m ( 8ft ) away from the screen the electric field will have fallen to around background levels. So it is advisable to sit about 2.5m (8ft) away from the television screen to prevent the negative effects of electric field generated by the television. Children in particular should take care not to sit close to the television screen, instead they should sit about 8 feet away from the television screen.

ELECTRIC BLANKET
Electric Blanket emit some of the highest electric fields of all, very close to the body. If we leave the electric blanket on all night, we are exposed to those electric fields for many hours at a time. In some electric blankets the wiring circuit is arranged so that the switch is located after the live current has passed through the blanket. In this case simply switching off at the switch on the supply cord or relying on the time switch, may not be sufficient to avoid exposure to the electric field. The safest way is to use the blanket to warm the bed and then pull the plug out of the socket at the wall before getting in the electric blanket.


BED SIDE LAMP
Bed side lamps with metal bases give off very high electric fields, so it is advisable to choose one with a wooden base or ceramic based to minimise the negative effects of electric field affecting the human body.

CELL PHONE OR MOBILE TELEPHONE The cell phone or mobile telephones transmit and receive low power microwaves, which can be absorbed by the body's tissues. Spending long time on cell phone or mobile telephone is likely to have harmful effects on health of human being. Headaches after using a cellphone are the first sign of harmful effects on health of human being.


COMPUTER SCREEN
Work stations are usually only 50cm (19.5 inches) from the operator's face, hands, and upper limbs, so electric field exposure to human being is high.
