AMAZING FACTS ABOUT LINEN FABRICS
The Ancient Egyptians believed that linen was a gift of the God and regarded it as sacred. Linen was used in holy ceremonies and it was the only fabric which leaders of worship were allowed to wear next to their skin. It symbolised cleanliness and purity. Linen was widely used by Pharaohs and other nobility. Linen was also used extensively in the mummifying process, beside gold, as it helped to preserve the dead body, thus ensuring that the deceased's spirit remained immortal. Recently scientists discovered cutting of linen preserved in British Museum, which were woven 6,000 years ago is structurally still as perfect as today’s linen.

Thus linen has the ability to resist the march of ‘time’.
Secondly, germs do not affect Linen. Legend has it that Cleopatra, after her daily aromatic bath, would rest in a bed full of linen pillows filled with flaxseed, since it would not aggravate her delicate, alabaster-like skin and body. Modern agricultural practices and newer technological processes have introduced another kind of pollution Inorganic fertilisers - Nitrogen, Phosphates and potash have been applied in larger quantities to farm lands. These phosphates and nitrates concentrate in lakes and estuaries causing algal blooms, by which wide expanses of water get choked, plants rot, oxygen is used up and fish die. Besides fertilisers, numerous pesticides, insecticides and herbicides are also applied. These substances are reported to contaminate both surface and gruond waters. Some of them are also carried to distant places by wind, rain and rivers. These are hazardous for human beings, animals, birds and fish. It is reported that in particular part of Russia, Lung cancer has increased by 50% in last five years, Stomach cancer rates by 30%, and birth defects by about 55% - all caused apparently due to excessive use of pesticides. Nature tries to keep us healthy but we bring on sickness by continuous violation of the laws of nature. Without health life becomes a burden. Air pollution can affect buman health, animals, plants, materials, besides causing global effects. It has proved beyond doubt that polluted air is highly detrimental to human health and is a contributory factors in deaths from diseases, such as lung cancer.

GLOBAL EFFECTS
Air pollution impinges on climate too. Day by day the earth becomes more warmer. Certain gases in the lower atmosphere, chiefly CO2(Carbondioxide), Chlorofluorcarbons, methane and oxides of nitrogen form a layer over the earth. Normally the earth absorbs heat and radiates it to space. But the presence of layers of these gases over the earth do not permit the heat to dissipate. Instead heat gets radiated back to earth's surface making it warmer still. The earth's warming trend ocurred during a time when industrial growth greatly increased the Carbodioxide content in the atmosphere. If the green house gases increase, then more heat will be trapped and radiated back to the earth, resulting in the earth becoming warmer still. Undue warming of the earth will lead to grave consequences. Polar ice caps may melt further and increase the size of the oceans which may submerge large expanses of land. Further, rainfall patterns may get altered, affecting the flora and fauna. Human beings will become more vulnerable to disease, due to a substantial increase in viruses, parasites, and insects that thrive better under warmer conditions. Every one agrees pollution is concomitant to development, but not to this extent ! Not at the cost of Human Health ! Pollution has to remain within tolerable limits. The purpose is to create awareness about pollution.

" SAVE OUR EARTH ", by uniting together to guard against the hazards of pollution. Start preferring and buying Organically grown products.  This leads to demand and encourages farmers to grow organic products. Thereby we can help ourself and the humanity to minimise chemical ingredients utility in all areas of day - to- day life, thereby save our EARTH. A man can live without food for some time, without water for some time, but without breathing even for a minute. It is estimated that an average adult male exchanges 15kg of air a day in comparison to about 1.5kg of the food consumed and 2.5kg of water intake. Therefore it is obvious tht the quantum of pollutants that enter our body through respiration would be manifold(or much higher) in comparison to those taken in through polluted water or contaminated food. Therefore air pollution cannot be taken very light.

Purpose: Aged, Consumer issues, Environment, Forestry, Health, Urban Development, Water Aim/Objective/Mission: The Bangalore Environment Trust was conceived in October 1986 and registered on 15th April 1989 by eminent persons like Mr. Zafar Futehally, former member, National Environmental Advisory Committee, Government of India and Prof Satish Dhawan, formor Director, Indian Institute of Science and & Chairman, ISRO. Their mission was  to attempt to co-ordinate with the like minded individuals and institutions to improve the physical and aesthetic condition of the city. The Bangalore Environment Trust was conceived in October 1986. Since its inception, the Bangalore Environment Trust has been exerting to improve the environmental conditions of Bangalore City. One such area which the Trust concentrated initially is in abating noise pollution. Noise pollution affects the physical and mental health of those who are constantly exposed to high noise levels or to sudden bursts of noise. To enlighten and to bring awareness to the public at large, the Trust brought out a book-let both in Kannada and English. It underlines the dangers to one's health due to noise pollution, sources of noise pollution, citizen's rights and duties, Acts and Laws on noise pollution, and finally what an individual can do to control noise pollution. Noise pollution is dangerous to health and can easily be abated by a bit of self-restraint. The Trust then concentrated on air pollution. Air pollution is one of the critical problems mankind is facing today since the air we breathe has become increasingly atmospheric pollution. Emission from automobile, smoke from industries, burning of waste, cigratte smoking etc. contribute to degrading the air that we breathe. Polluted air not only affects human health but causes material damage resulting in economic loss. Further, it has long term effects on our fragile ecology. Bangalore Environmnent Trust provides a forum both for voicing your grievances and participating in the movement to improve the environment. A booklet (similar to the booklet on Noise pollution) has been brought out by Bangalore Environment Trust explaining the causes of air pollution, air contaminants, effect on human health, ambient air quality standards, air pollution laws and regulations, remedies and actions to be taken and finally what one can do to reduce air pollution.

ACHIEVEMENTS (BANGALORE ENVIRONMENT TRUST)
Published a comprehensive booklet on noise pollution entitled "Dont be deafened or irritated by noise, know your rights and demand them" in English & Kannada.
Brought out a video casette on "Noise pollution by Crackers"
Published a comprehensive booklet on Air pollution "Sick of air pollution ? Be part of the solution"
Tree planting at Vasanthnagar and langford road.
Brought out a booklet listing the names, addresses and telephone numbers to be contacted in various types of emergencies.

ENVIRONMENTAL OESTROGENS
The environmental oestrogens are called xenoestrogens. A number of chemicals and products have been found to have strong oestrogenic characteristics. We enjoy all the benefits of our modern society by taking Advantage of plastics, pesticides and house-hold detergents, but at the signigicant price of disrupted hormone health. When we eat these chemicals, or are exposed to them, our xenoestrogen load is increased. Animals are near the top of the 'food chain'. This means that foods that they have eaten, which have been burdened with chemical oestrogens, concentrate in their fats. When we eat animal fats, we are exposed to these hormone-like chemicals.

SOURCES OF XENOESTROGENS
Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, wood treatments, head lice treatment.
Plastics, including chewable children's toys, cling film food wrap, plastic linings to cartons and tins.
Industrial and farming compounds which find their way into the water supply.
Foods such as sprayed vegetables and fruit, also meat, fish and dairy foods. The  environmental oestrogens found from these external sources are not precisely the same as the oestrogens which we find in our bodies, but can be best described as hormone-mimickers and these uninvited guests are particularly disruptive. These xenoestrogens are considered stronger in effect when compared to our natural oestrogens, and also persist and buld up in our body tissues. The cumulative effect of  environmental oestrogen exposure is to put people, both women and men, into a hyper-oestrogenic state. This means that we have more circulating oestrogens which can disrupt the normal working of our body.

DIET AND OESTROGEN BALANCE
The equilibrium of female hormone balance is influenced by dietary factors such as fat and alcohol intake, sugar balance and fibre levels. Excessive amounts of fat in the diet encourage high oestrogen levels: Body fat produces oestrogens in its own right. Animal fats, and especially dairy products, come with their own oestrogen load from the animal. Vegetable fats are rich sources of chemical oestrogen 'mimickers' in the form of pesticides. Fibre, which we tend to think of as a digestive aid, is so powerful a hormone modulator that it can reduce the risk of oestrogen-related breast cancer. Fibre acts as a sponge soaking up oestrogens and excreting them from the bowels. Fibre is helpful to relieve symptoms of oestrogen overload, including PMS, bloating and breast symptoms. The bowels are the normal route of excretion for oestrogens. If there is insufficient fibre, and transit time in the digestive tract is slowed down, the oestrogens have the time to be reabsorbed into the blood stream, to recirculate, and to contribute to oestrogen-related bloating. The Liver is an organ of digestion, digestive health is directly linked to hormone health. Oestrogens which are no longer required are broken down in the liver, but if the liver is overburdened or working sub-optimally, oestrogen breakdown is impaired, which means that oestrogen levels in the body remain high and in turn lead to symptoms of hormone imbalance. Liver health is affected primarily by the types of fat we eat, our alcohol and caffeine intake, and exposure to pollutants. The waxy coating on some fruits which trap chemicals, as well as oils, margarines and animal fats. Many cans, packets and drinks cartons have thin plastic linings inside them. These can leach oestrogenic compounds into the foods. Do not heat food in plastic containers. The plastic containers can leach oestrogenic compounds into the foods. The more flexible a plastic is, the more likely it is to leach environmental oestrogen (xenoestrogens) into food, especially into fatty foods such as meat, butter, cheese, biscuits, pastry, pies and so on. Shop bought foods in plastic are a problem, especially fatty foods as pies, Chocolates, cheese and cold cuts. Bleached products do not contribute directly to oestrogenic overload, but do so indirectly and significantly by their manufacture, which results in dioxin by-products. Dioxins are highly damaging oestrogenic  compounds which are widespread environment pollutants.

REUSE OF MINERAL WATER BOTTLES
Many are unaware of poisoning caused by re-using plastic bottles. Some of you may be in the habit of using and re-using your disposable mineral water bottles ( Eg: Nestle, Bisleri, Kinley, Aquafina, Evian....etc., ) keeping them in your car or at work. In a nut-shell, the plastic called polyethylene terephthalate or PET) used in these bottles contains potentially a carcinogenic element (some thing called diethylhydroxylamine or DEHA). The disposable mineral water bottles are safe for one time use only. Repeated washing and rinsing can cause the plastic to break downa and the carcinogens(cancer-causing chemical agents) can leak into the water that we are drinking. It is better to invest in water bottles that are really meant for multiple uses. Prevention is better than cure.

PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS
Steps to minimize exposure to harmful electric fields, and reduce the risks to health.

1. Avoid putting beds near electrical appliances. Most adults sleep for around eight hours in every twenty four hours, and children even longer. Hence if we are sleeping in an electric field, we will be exposing ourself to the harmful effects of electric field for long periods. Alternating electric and magnetic fields can interfere with the metabolic processes of the body.

2. Avoid sleeping near electric heaters. Electric storage heaters heat up the stones inside them overnight and release this heat during the day. Similarly, electric heaters in hot water tanks heat the water during the night. Any thing placed near them is exposed to their adverse effects, so the solution is not to place bed near electric heaters. It is advisable to pace the electric heater at such a distance that the electric heater heats the air of the room and prevents transferring heat directly to human body.

3. Switch off and unplug appliances after use Whenever electric current flows through an appliance there is an electric field around it. In some appliances the on/off switch is located in the wiring circuit after live current has passed through the appliance, so even when it is switched off electric current flows through the electric appliance an generates an electric field.

4. Keep distance from electrical appliances Hand held tools such as electric drills, sanders, hedge trimmers, or hair dryers, generate high electric fields and are held close to the body. Often we use for few munutes. If we need to use hand held electric tools for more than an hour, at a time, it is advisable to have a rest for at least ten minutes for every hour.

PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS GENERATED BY KITCHEN APPLIANCES

IRON
In common with any otherhand-held electrical appliance, iron generates a high electric field and is held close to the body. If ironing for long periods it is advisable to take a 10-minute break every hour.

ELECTRIC SOCKETS
Surrounding electric sockets there is inevitably an electric field.

RADIO
The electric fields generated by radios are not very high, so radios do not cause adverse effects on human being.

ELECTRIC COFFEE MAKER
Coffee makers that keep the coffee warm give off high electric fields. It is advisable not to keep the coffee makers near us when we are likely to sit or rest for long hours to prevent exposure to high electric fields generated by coffee makers.

MICROWAVE OVEN
It is advisable not to stand in front of the microwave oven while cooking, as the electric fields are enormous next to the appliance. Unlike an electric field does not stop when the source is turned off. So it is advisable to leave microwaved food for 5 minutes after cooking before eating it.

PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS GENERATED BY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES IN LIVING ROOM

TABLE LAMP
A lamp with a metal base creates very high fields. There is anecdotal evidence of people suffering frequent migraines or headaches after sitting reading for long periods by electric lamps with metal base. When the electric lamps with metal base was replaced with electric lamps with wooden base the head aches ceased.

STANDARD LAMP
It is advisable to avoid lamps made of metal, especially brass near arm chair or any where we rest for long periods.

ADJUSTABLE LIGHT SWITCH
This type of light switch gives out very high electric fields unless it has a well earthed brass cover plate. It is advisable not to place the arm chair or sofa or bed near the adjustable light switch.

RADIANT ELECTRIC FIRE
The fields around radiant electric fire can be high. It is advisable not to sit directly in front of the radiant electric fire. It is healthier to use the radiant electric fire to heat the room air.

TELEVISION
The electric field is high right next to the television screen, may be as much as 50 volts per metre. At 2.5m ( 8ft ) away from the screen the electric field will have fallen to around background levels. So it is advisable to sit about 2.5m (8ft) away from the television screen to prevent the negative effects of electric field generated by the television. Children in particular should take care not to sit close to the television screen, instead they should sit about 8 feet away from the television screen.

PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS GENERATED BY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES IN BED ROOM

ELECTRIC BLANKET
Electric Blanket emit some of the highest electric fields of all, very close to the body. If we leave the electric blanket on all night, we are exposed to those electric fields for many hours at a time. In some electric blankets the wiring circuit is arranged so that the switch is located after the live current has passed through the blanket. In this case simply switching off at the switch on the supply cord or relying on the time switch, may not be sufficient to avoid exposure to the electric field. The safest way is to use the blanket to warm the bed and then pull the plug out of the socket at the wall before getting in the electric blanket.

BED SIDE LAMP
Bed side lamps with metal bases give off very high electric fields, so it is advisable to choose one with a wooden base or ceramic based to minimise the negative effects of electric field affecting the human body.

PROTECTING OURSELF FROM HARMFUL ELECTRIC FIELDS GENERATED BY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES IN WORK ENVIRONMENT OR STUDY ROOM

CORDLESS PHONE
The newer digital (DECT) cordless phones radiate all the time, and they may be a cause of headaches. It is probably best to restrict their use as far as possible. CELL PHONE OR MOBILE TELEPHONE The cell phone or mobile telephones transmit and receive low power microwaves, which can be absorbed by the body's tissues. Spending long time on cell phone or mobile telephone is likely to have harmful effects on health of human being. Headaches after using a cellphone are the first sign of harmful effects on health of human being.

COMPUTER SCREEN
Work stations are usually only 50cm (19.5 inches) from the operator's face, hands, and upper limbs, so electric field exposure to human being is high.

The Chittaranjan Palace, built for Mysore's princesses, has been lovingly restored as a  small hotel. In extensive gardens, with formal lawns and shaded pergolas, and fringed by majestic trees, the hotel is an oasis of calm. It has been renovated and furnished using traditional Indian crafts. It offers comfortable surroundings, friendly staff, and a restful, creative atmosphere. Guests have come for a night and stayed for a month! The Green Hotel has been set up as a model of sustainable tourism, by a UK charity. All profits are distributed to charitable and environmental projects in India. Mysore, the charming town immortalised by RK Narayan in his Malgudi novels, provides an excellent base from which to tour South India. The Western Ghats, the coffee plantations of Coorg, the game reserves of the Nilgris and the Ooty hill station are all within a few hours drive. Accommodation Guests have the use of the whole of the former palace, including drawing rooms, a well-chosen library, and beautiful verandas. The gardens are large and provide peaceful relaxation. The hotel has won the Mysore Horticultural Society first prize for the best garden and for the Rose Garden, and for the display of potted plants. Because of the excellent climate, guests spend most of the day in the garden, on the lawns, or, for those in the Garden Block, on the terrace outside their rooms. They do not have air-conditioned rooms, TV or generators because of our environmentally friendly policies. However the hotel is very airy and well ventilated, all the rooms have fans, and the temperatures in Mysore make air conditioning largely unneccesary. They offer spacious, soothing lawns and shady trees to recline under. There are 31 rooms, all with modern en-suite bathrooms.
